Types of Sedation Dentistry
The most common types of dental sedation are nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV or intravenous sedation.
Nitrous Oxide
Also referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nosepiece or mask connected to a machine that delivers the gas. You will begin to feel calm in about four or five minutes.
The Inspired Smiles team will make sure that you receive the correct dosage throughout the treatment.
After the procedure is over, pure oxygen is used to flush the laughing gas out of your system. Because there are no long term effects, you are able to drive yourself home from the dentist’s office in Richmond.
Oral Conscious Sedation
This type of sedation dentistry is given in pill or liquid form about an hour before your procedures begins making you quite groggy. However, as with laughing gas you are still able to communicate with your Richmond dentist.
Because this type of sedation wears off temporarily it will affect your motor skills and memory. If you are having oral conscious sedation you will need to ask someone to drive you home from your dental visit.
IV Sedation
Intravenous sedation is used for patients suffering from extreme dental fear and for people who are having multiple dental procedures at the same time.
During IV sedation, Inspired Smiles will administer the sedative directly into your bloodstream using an IV line while monitoring your blood pressure, heart rate and other vitals adjusting the dosage as necessary.
The majority of people who have had IV sedation have no memory of the treatment when they wake up. With that being said, just like oral conscious sedation you will need someone to take you home from the dentist’s office.
