What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from ceramic or titanium surgically placed in your jawbone. After the implant has healed, your implant dentist in Richmond will place an artificial tooth on the top of the post. While everyone is different, most dental implant procedures take 6 months to a year to complete.

Complete Care Before During and After

01. Before Surgery
It’s important to tell Inspired Smiles if you are on any type of medication as this could impede the healing process. If you suffer from dental fear, talk to your dentist about sedation dentistry during your dental implant procedure.
02. After Surgery
It’s normal to experience swelling and discomfort the first day or two after surgery. Sit with your head elevated and keep ice packs on your face for 15 minutes each hour repeating throughout your day, as needed. Take your medications and only consume liquids and soft foods for 48 hours after the oral surgery.
03. Healing
Your gums and jawbone can heal in as little as six weeks or take up to 12 months to heal completely. During this time, you may experience sore gums. If you wear dentures or other dental restorations, talk to your dentist, as you may be able to wear them while you are healing.
04. Long Term Dental Implant Care
Caring for your new implants continues even after you have healed and completed the procedure. You must brush, floss, rinse, and schedule regular dental appointments with Inspired Smiles.

After six months, your implants will be checked for bone loss around the implants, as this could be a sign of dental implant failure.
