Esthetic Dentures and Partials

There are two types of esthetic dentures available in Richmond, VA. Complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when a patient is missing all of his or her teeth or when they are planning a complete extraction.
Our dentists recommend partial dentures when a patient is missing many of their natural teeth and dental implants are not possible. While most patients are good candidates for tooth implants, not all are. Among this population are smokers and tobacco chewers, those with gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis, and children who have missing teeth. Using tobacco increases the chance of dental implant failure, and no patient wants to go through the entire process only to have the implant fail. Gum disease can cause your natural teeth to become loose and even fall out. Theoretically, our dentists could treat your gum disease so that you would be eligible to get dental implants, but patients prone to gum disease also have higher dental implant failure rates. Some children and teens lose teeth due to auto accidents or sports injuries, while a few simply have congenitally missing teeth. While these children will likely be good candidates for tooth implants when they become adults, they must wait until they are done growing to undergo the procedure at our Richmond dental clinic.

Dentures for Missing Teeth

Unfortunately, not all people are good candidates for dental implants and that is where dentures come in. Dentures are tooth prosthetics designed to function and look like your natural smile. Dentures are removable and much more advanced than they used to be.
The structure that supports the artificial teeth for the denture is made from resin or flexible polymer. The supporting structure resembles your natural gum line and is made to fit snugly over your gums.
The teeth are made from hard resin, which is much stronger than plastic or porcelain. Keep in mind that unlike dental implants, dentures will need to be replaced from time to time. The teeth on dentures are like your car tires, and will need to be replaced as they wear over several years.
01. Full Dentures
If you are having a full set of dentures, any remaining teeth will be extracted to make way for your removable dentures. Digital pictures and x-rays are taken to custom make your new smile, which could take a couple of weeks.

When your new dentures are ready, our dentists, Dr. Victoria Yeager or Dr. Daniel Yeager, will check them for fit and comfort. It’s important that your new dentures fit properly — if they are uncomfortable, you may not wear them as often as you should, leading to gum shrinkage and facial collapse, among other problems. While dentures take some getting used to, they should not hurt. That’s why it’s important to get your dentures made at a reputable dentist office in Richmond and not a dental clinic advertising “affordable dentures” where the prices seem too good to be true. You want dentures that are comfortable, look natural and last a long time.
02. Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are natural looking and removable and used for people who still have some healthy natural teeth. Partial dentures are made from acrylic and metal and attach to your existing teeth. This makes them strong enough to support eating, chewing and speaking.

Some partial dentures are 100 percent acrylic and while they may not be as strong as metal and acrylic, acrylic only partials are a good solution in some situations.

Dentists hesitate to remove teeth that are healthy and in good condition, and that’s why we make partials at our dental clinic in Richmond. Partial dentures fill in the gaps left by teeth you have lost to disease, accidents or other conditions. They not only make eating much easier, but they make your smile look beautiful again. If you have a number of missing teeth, you don’t want to wait too long to go to a dentist office to inquire about partial dentures. The longer you wait, the higher the chances that your remaining teeth will migrate into the spaces left behind by your missing teeth. When this happens, it makes it impossible to place a dental implant or a partial denture. First, you would need to have orthodontia to move your natural teeth back into their rightful positions, leaving room for your new replacement teeth.
