Dental implants are artificial tooth roots surgically placed in or on the jawbone. Manufactured from titanium or biocompatible ceramics, the implants act as artificial tooth roots fusing to the bone creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.

Dental implants are made up of three separate parts — the titanium post, the abutment and the crown. Before the post can be implanted in your jaw, our dentists must check to make sure you have adequate bone mass. If you have been missing teeth for many years, your jawbone may have atrophied. Teeth help stimulate the jawbone, keeping it healthy and strong. But when a tooth is lost, the bone begins to recede. If this is the case with you, our dentists will first do a bone graft to build up your jawbone. We may use a piece of your own bone, or synthetic bone. Once your jawbone has gained adequate strength, our dentists can place the implant post.
Patients are under anesthesia when the post is implanted, so they don’t feel a thing. However, once the anesthesia wears off, you may be sore for up to 10 days. Ibuprofen is usually sufficient to relieve any discomfort. Before the next stage — attaching the abutment and the crown — you must wait a period of time to heal. Healing often takes from three to six months, but it could be longer, especially if you require a bone graft or gum lift first. During this healing period, our dentists may recommend esthetic temporary appliances to replace missing teeth and protect the implants. Especially if you are getting a tooth implant to replace a tooth you recently had pulled, wearing a “flipper” tooth in the space left behind will make you feel less self-conscious around others.
Once your implants have fused to your bone, known as osseointegration, your new custom color matched artificial teeth are placed on top of the posts and checked for fit. Once satisfied, the team from Inspired Smiles will secure them into place.
The patients at our Richmond dental clinic are always thrilled with the result of their teeth replacement procedure. Your tooth implants will look and feel exactly like your natural teeth — no one will ever be able to tell you have implants. And unlike dentures, with dental implants, you never have to worry about your replacement teeth slipping or falling out. Function is restored, and you get your beautiful smile back.
The Best Replacement for Missing Teeth
Dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth. They are the longest lasting option available today. In fact, when good oral hygiene is practiced dental implants can last for the rest of your life. Maintenance from the team at Inspired Smiles will help you keep your implants in the best possible condition.
While you will have to brush and floss as you normally would, you can eat and drink without having to worry about cavities, as these artificial teeth will not decay. However, you will have to be careful and keep your gums clean as you can still develop gingivitis and the more serious periodontal disease around implants.
Dental Implants Can Change Your Life
While you may have gotten used to chewing more on one side due to missing teeth, you may never have gotten used to seeing the gaps in your smile when you looked in the mirror. You may have even tried to avoid smiling or laughing over the years so no one would see that you have missing teeth. Teeth replacement changes all this. Once your tooth implant procedure at our Richmond dental clinic is complete, you’ll be able to laugh and smile again with confidence. You may even find that you are more outgoing and social. Don’t put off teeth replacement. Call our dentist office today and make an appointment for a consultation.
